Personal Geographies and Heart Journeys

I recently took a tutorial on creating art journal maps from a delightfully imaginative artist, Jill K. Berry. This is the painting that emerged as a result of my new creative map making skills and I am thrilled to share with you her new book, Personal Geographies, and a link to her blog with a giveaway (it ends today, so hop over there now)!

There are beautiful examples of her work and a gallery of work by other artists who share different techniques and 21 mixed media projects to "chart the innermost workings of your mind, document your artistic path and create an unfolding maze of your future dreams and goals."

This painting shows the path from my heart to yours... the roads we travel and sometimes cross over, the journeys we make to find happiness, love, and friendship along the way. It was fun to paint in this way and I hope you enjoy the journey you travel!

These quotes seem to reflect some of the thoughts that ran through my mind as lines became paths, and shapes became fields, streams, and bodies of water.

One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” – Henry Miller

“Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white.” - Mark Jenkins

Where will your adventures take you today?

Thanks, Mary. Alas, it was an online tutorial... but I yearn to take one of her classes. Maybe in 2012?
